History - Departmental
Over the years the fire department has had various types of equipment. Some of them include:
The first piece of apparatus they had was a 1938 Seagrave Pumper which was turned over to the U.P.N. Fire Department at its inception. This pumper had a 100 gallon water tank, ladders, hose bed, extinguishers and other equipment normally found on fire trucks at that time.
The second truck was purchased with money left in the U.P.N. Township tax reserve fund. A Dodge chassis carried a 1,000 tank with rear hose reel and storage cabinets. It was equipped with a Hale pump and other accessories and put into service during January of 1951.
The third apparatus acquired by the Department was a Rescue Truck. This was a used 1941 Chevrolet 3/- ton panel body truck purchased from another Fire Company for $312.00. The money was donated to the Department by a local civic group. The funds donated also purchased a 12 foot aluminum rescue boat and a 5 horse power Lauson Air Cooled outboard motor, both of which were carried on the Rescue Truck. This truck was put into service during July of 1951.
The fourth apparatus, purchased by the department from the Gross Funeral Home in Penns Grove , was a used 1938 Packard Hearse. The funds were donated by the U.P.N. Civic Association in August of 1952. This vehicle was converted into the first U.P.N. Ambulance by mounting two headlights on the roof and painting the body white. The members completed the job by completely renovating the interior with a linoleum floor, building wooden cabinets and adding the finishing touches. Mr. William N. Musson donated a siren with light and interested citizens donated linens so this piece of equipment could be put into service during September of 1952. This ambulance served the residents of U.P.N. for five years and was then sold to Quinton Township for $400 as their first ambulance.
